Foundation honors Pinellas County volunteer
Sarasota, Fla., Nov. 7, 2019 — A sold-out event, Southern State of Kind, held Oct. 12, 2019, at the Armature Works in Tampa, Fla. raised over $400,000 to benefit cancer patients in need. The event was co-chaired by Florida Cancer Specialists (FCS) Physicians Dr. R. Waide Weaver and Dr. David D. Wright.
These net proceeds will directly benefit the FCS Foundation, which provides financial assistance for non-medical living expenses to qualified cancer patients who are currently undergoing treatment in Florida. Because the FCS Foundation’s overhead is paid by the physicians at Florida Cancer Specialists, 100% of donations benefit cancer patients in need.
The Southern chic-themed event featured a silent auction, chance drawings, dinner entertainment by Dale Henry, aka “Paintman,” music by JT Curtis and the Scoundrels, line dancing and delicious southern fare. Thank you to everyone who purchased tickets for the chance drawing and congratulations to FCS Medical Oncologist Dr. Don Luong on winning the grand prize of a Holland America Line® cruise for two!
Co-chair Dr. R. Waide Weaver said, “I’m very proud to be part of an event that raised enough money to assist 180 qualified cancer patients in paying their non-medical expenses.”
“The FCS Foundation events continue to grow in popularity each year, and that is very exciting to see. It is profoundly rewarding to make such a difference in the lives of patients and their families who are affected by cancer,” said Co-chair Dr. David Wright.
Foundation Board Chairman Dr. Michael Diaz added, “Since 2011, the FCS Foundation has given out more than $5.5 million in patient grants. Funds raised help to make the cancer journey less stressful for those in need of assistance during their treatment.”
During the event, the FCS Foundation gave special recognition to Justin Doyle, founder of the Hope, Health & Sunshine Foundation. His non-profit organization assists cancer patients in the Tampa Bay area with groceries, gas cards, healthy snacks and patient gift bags. For the past three years, he has provided Thanksgiving dinners for cancer patients in Pinellas County. FCS Foundation Executive Director Lynn Rasys said, “Justin and his family have been touched by cancer, and he is definitely paying it forward in the most generous way possible.”

About Florida Cancer Specialists Foundation
The Florida Cancer Specialists (FCS) Foundation provides financial support to qualified adult cancer patients in the state of Florida for expenses such as rent or mortgage, car payments and utility bills. By giving patients peace of mind in knowing that their bills are being paid while they are undergoing treatment, the FCS Foundation allows them to concentrate on what really matters – fighting cancer.
Due to the generosity of the Florida Cancer Specialists physicians in covering all overhead expenses for the Foundation, 100% of donations received go directly toward paying the essential non-medical living expenses of an adult battling cancer.
